چکیده

Traffic noise reduces foraging time and effort in greater mouse-eared bats, presumably by masking rustling sounds made by moving arthropods. Anthropogenic noise is becoming a major concern in conservation biology.

Hunting at the highway: traffic noise reduces foraging efficiency in acoustic predators

Noise pollution from human traffic networks and industrial activity impacts vast areas of our planet. While anthropogenic noise effects on animal communication are well documented, we have very limited understanding of noise impact on more complex ecosystem processes, such as predator-prey interactions, albeit urgently needed to devise mitigation measures. Here, we show that traffic noise decre...

Behavioural Ecology: Noise Annoys at Community Level

A new study on the impact of anthropogenic noise on birds takes a behavioural discipline to the level of community ecology: noise can not only harm individual species but also alter species relationships.

Delayed Response and Biosonar Perception Explain Movement Coordination in Trawling Bats

Animal coordinated movement interactions are commonly explained by assuming unspecified social forces of attraction, repulsion and alignment with parameters drawn from observed movement data. Here we propose and test a biologically realistic and quantifiable biosonar movement interaction mechanism for echolocating bats based on spatial perceptual bias, i.e. actual sound field, a reaction delay,...

Bats perceptually weight prey cues across sensory systems when hunting in noise.

Anthropogenic noise can interfere with environmental information processing and thereby reduce survival and reproduction. Receivers of signals and cues in particular depend on perceptual strategies to adjust to noisy conditions. We found that predators that hunt using prey sounds can reduce the negative impact of noise by making use of prey cues conveyed through additional sensory systems. In t...

A comparative analysis of brain size in relation to foraging ecology and phylogeny in the Chiroptera.

Variations in total brain mass and in the mass of three brain regions (main olfactory bulb, hippocampus, auditory nuclei) were examined using a data set for 63 species of bats (Chiroptera). Using both conventional and phylogenetically based analysis of covariance (log body mass as covariate), we tested several hypotheses that relate total brain mass or the size of the components to variation in...
